NAIFA-supported Professional Designations

Professional designations signal your commitment to your career, and also to the financial security of the individuals, families, and businesses you serve. They demonstrate a level of professionalism and skill that enhances your image and our industry’s reputation.

Through our long-standing relationship with LUTC and The American College, we offer classroom and online training programs for professional certifications including Chartered Life Underwriter, Chartered Financial Consultant, Life Underwriting Training Council Fellow, and Certified Financial Planner™.

You can work toward any of these designations by calling
The American College at 610-526-1000.

Certified Financial Planner (CFP™)
Introduced in 1972, the CFP™ designation has become a widely recognized financial advising credential among consumers. It is awarded to those individuals who have met its rigorous educational standards and agreed to the CFP Board Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility. The LUTC program at The American College is offering moderator-led study groups to prepare NAIFA members to sit for the CFP™ examination.

Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU)
A CLU is a professional advisor in all areas of business and family financial security encompassed by life insurance. In the United States, the American College is the accredited institution that awards this designation, as well as the ChFC.

To become a CLU, an individual must successfully complete a comprehensive course of study and demonstrate competence by passing a series of eight college-level examinations in several subject areas including: life insurance, pensions, taxation, finance, economics and business, and estate planning. Rigid ethical and experience requirements also must be met.

Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC)
The ChFC is a professional in the field of life insurance and financial advising. To receive the designation, an individual must successfully complete a broad program covering several financial services-related subjects. The eight program courses help to teach the individual about planning in the tax, insurance, business, retirement and investment fields.

In order to receive the ChFC, individuals must meet specified experience requirements and ethical standards, and agree to comply with The American College Code of Ethics and Procedures. Students completing The American College’s CFP™ courses also earn credits toward their ChFC.

Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow (LUTCF)
The LUTCF designation is conferred only upon those individuals who can meet or exceed the exacting qualification standards determined by two of the leading insurance organizations in the United States: The American College and the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors. The LUTCF designation demonstrates a firm commitment to NAIFA's Code of Ethics and establishes an agent's credentials in dealing with other financial professionals. It also clearly marks the agent's long-term commitment to professional development and growth. LUTCFs are encouraged to participate in additional LUTC courses and continuing education seminars, as well as other highly regarded industry programs. To satisfy the educational requirements for the LUTCF credential, students must successfully complete five courses.
